A Dream in Danger

A key tenet of the American Dream is that children will grow up to be better off than their parents. Deep economic pessimism has done some real damage to the idea, as a new poll of adults from CNN and the Opinion Research Corporation shows. Just a third (34 percent) thought most children would be better off than their parents, while 63 percent thought they would be worse off. Non-whites (45 percent) were more optimistic than whites (30 percent) about their children’s prospects.
