The Supreme Court heard an important case this week on the meaning of the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms. According to Gallup’s 2007 figures, 34 percent of Americans say that they own a handgun, rifle, shotgun, or other kind of firearm, while 64 percent say that they do not. Fifty-seven percent are satisfied with the nation’s laws or policies on guns, compared to 43 percent who are not. Most polls suggest that Americans would prefer to enforce current gun laws more strictly rather than pass new ones. Source: The Gallup Organization, October 2007.
