The share of electricity generated from nuclear power in the United States has grown considerably in recent years, from 4.5 percent in 1973 to 19.4 percent last year. Even so, considerable skepticism about such power remains. According to a recent online poll from Harris Interactive and the Financial Times, 52 percent of Americans favor building new nuclear plants, compared to 48 percent who oppose. In France, where nuclear power accounts for nearly 80 percent of electricity generation, opinion is split down the middle, with 49 percent of people in favor of building new plants and 51 percent opposed. Large majorities in Spain and Germany oppose the construction of new plants. Source: Online poll from Harris Interactive and the Financial Times, January-February 2008.
