President Obama, and Democrats in general, usually have a large advantage on survey questions about empathy. In the 2012 Election Day exit poll, President Obama led Mitt Romney by 63 points in terms of caring about people like you (81 to 18 percent). But a new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that for the first time in the Obama presidency, more people say that the president does not understand the problems of people like themselves, compared to the people polled who say he does understand them. Early in his term in January 2009, 72 percent of those polled said he did understand them. This polling team has asked this question 13 times over the course of his presidency.
