British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in Washington for a visit today, faces difficult economic and political times at home. Two-thirds of Britons think the economy will get worse in the next year, the country’s Economic Index is at its lowest point since March 1980, and Brown’s own approval rating is extremely low. When asked how they would vote “if a General Election were held tomorrow,” 40 percent of Britons said they would vote for the Conservative Party, compared to 35 percent for Brown’s Labour Party. Eighteen percent said they would vote for the Liberal Democrats. Source: Ipsos/Market&Opinion Research International, March 2008.
