New Yorkers support Eliot Spitzer's decision to resign the governorship of their state. In a WNBC/Marist poll, conducted March 11, 70 percent of New Yorkers, including 65 percent of Democrats and 81 percent of Republicans, said Spitzer should step down for his alleged involvement with a prostitution ring. When asked to rate the job Spitzer was doing as governor, only 30 percent described it as "excellent" or "good," down from 43 percent who gave that response one year ago. Two-thirds of those polled, including 57 percent of Democrats, said that if the governor had not resigned the legislature should have impeached him and removed him from office.
