The Individual Mandate

When CBS News and the New York Times recently asked adults about various parts of the new health care law, reactions were strong. Eighty-six percent of respondents liked the provision that requires health insurance companies to cover preexisting conditions. Eighty-four percent approved of the provision to provide tax credits to small businesses that offer care to their employees. Seventy percent liked being able to keep children on their parents’ policies until age 26. However, only three in ten approved of the requirement for all Americans have to have health insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty.
