The Pull of Politics for the Young

The latest Harvard University Institute of Politics poll, conducted from late March through early April this year, surveyed young adults ages 18 to 29. Only 19 percent considered themselves to be “politically engaged or politically active.” Another question in the poll found that slightly less than a quarter (23 percent) said they would definitely be voting this fall and another 16 percent said they probably would. Turnout among the young who lean Democratic is especially crucial for Democrats in off-year elections. The news from this poll and others does not signal robust participation.
