Former CIA director David Petraeus’s problems don’t seem to have affected the public’s view of the military. In an early December Pew Research Center poll, 83 percent of respondents had a favorable view of the military and only 12 percent had an unfavorable view. Eighty percent of Independents, 85 percent of Democrats, and 87 percent of Republicans viewed the military favorably. In a separate question, 71 percent had a favorable view of military leaders.
